At Velar Petroleum, we believe that energy should not only fuel industries, it should fuel progress, people, and possibilities. That vision came to life with the launch of the Mokopane Diesel Depot, a transformative initiative designed to empower local communities, stimulate job creation, and drive sustainable economic growth in the heart of Limpopo.

A Community-Centered Partnership

Launched in October, the Mokopane Diesel Depot represents a powerful collaboration between Velar Petroleum, the communities of Tshamahansi and Ga-Kgubudi, and strategic partners in the mining sector, notably IvanPlats. This black-owned project breaks new ground by placing ownership directly in the hands of the people it is meant to benefit—51% of the business is community-owned, with the remaining 49% held by Velar Petroleum, a Johannesburg-based fuel solutions company committed to ethical and inclusive development. Behind this initiative is a visionary leadership team comprising Lee Dlamini, Thabo Kekana, and Tshepo Mahlaola, who worked tirelessly to bring the depot to life. From sourcing funding and establishing the infrastructure to building relationships with key stakeholders, their commitment to community-led progress has been unwavering.

Driving Jobs, Skills, and Sustainability

The core goal of the Mokopane Diesel Depot is to do more than just supply fuel, it is to ignite opportunity. With the mining industry serving as a key economic pillar in the region, the depot is strategically positioned to support local mining operations, particularly through its partnership with IvanPlats. However the impact goes far beyond logistics. The depot serves as a launchpad for local employment, offering young people from Mokopane and surrounding villages the chance to gain meaningful work experience, develop technical skills, and contribute to their local economy. By prioritizing local hiring and training, the project is helping to build a pipeline of skilled professionals who can thrive in the energy and logistics sectors.

Community and Industry in Harmony

The significance of the project was recognized at the official launch event, where Dr. Poobie Pillay, Transformation Manager at IvanPlats, gathered with community leaders, traditional councils, and media representatives to celebrate the milestone. Dr. Pillay praised the collaborative efforts that brought the depot to fruition and emphasized IvanPlats’ commitment to responsible corporate citizenship.

Thabo Kekana, a prominent figure at the depot, reflected on the importance of partnership in the success of the initiative, citing the African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together.” This sentiment echoes Velar Petroleum’s belief in building lasting impact through cooperation and shared vision.

Traditional Councils Voice Support

Representing the Mokopane Traditional Council, Matsobane David Kekana spoke passionately about the positive change this project represents. He noted that the depot gives young people a tangible stake in their future by creating opportunities not just for jobs, but for growth, pride, and economic participation. His words were echoed by Mmasuku Mohale from IvanPlats’ Sustainability team, who reiterated the company’s dedication to inclusive development and fostering transparent, meaningful relationships with local communities.

Looking Forward

For Velar Petroleum, the Mokopane Diesel Depot is more than just a business venture—it’s a model for transformational change. We are proud to stand beside the communities of Tshamahansi and Ga-Kgubudi as co-owners and collaborators. We are inspired by the trust shown by our partners and the traditional leadership. And we are committed to ensuring this project remains a beacon of opportunity, growth, and empowerment for years to come.

As we continue expanding our footprint across South Africa, Velar Petroleum remains dedicated to projects that balance commercial success with social responsibility, because we believe that progress should never come at the expense of the communities we serve and it should be built with them, for them, and by them.
